Cedar Valley Wins Game 1 at No. 14 Brookhaven

FARMERS BRANCH, Texas – Dallas College Cedar Valley's baseball team beat 14th-ranked Dallas College Brookhaven 5-3 Thursday in Game 1 of a three-game Dallas Athletic Conference series.

The Suns (24-25, 8-17 DAC) won their third game of the week – the last two in scoring five runs. Cedar Valley has beaten every team in the league at least once, with three of them holding National Junior College Athletic Association Division III rankings and another receiving votes.

David Chandler and Rendon Garcia combined for five of the Suns' 10 hits, while driving in a combined three runs. Chandler was 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Garcia went 2 for 3 with two RBI.

With the game tied at 2 after three innings, Cedar Valley scored twice in the top of the fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead. The Suns added a run in the ninth, and Brookhaven (28-23, 16-9) scored one of its own in the bottom of the inning, but it wasn't enough.

Cedar Valley starter Drake McIver (5-5) went seven innings in his second consecutive start to earn the win. He gave up two runs on seven hits and four walks, and struck out six. Reliever Caden Nachtigall pitched the last two innings, allowing a run, a hit and a walk, and had one strikeout to notch his first save this year.  

Ryan Hernandez and Julio Cuotto both went 1 for 5 with an RBI for the Suns. Elyjah Anderson doubled in one of his four at-bats. Addison Brown doubled and walked twice. Nathan Tucker was 1 for 5.

The Suns host Brookhaven in a twin bill at Lancaster High School 11 a.m. Saturday.
